GIFT (Green Ideas For Tourism for Europe) is an Erasmus+ KA2 project which seeks to enable and empower students and teachers to take actions that contribute to creating a sustainable society in the field of tourism. In particular, it is aimed at providing a comprehensive and easy to use online tool for teaching sustainable development in secondary schools.
The core idea of GIFT is to offer an environmental impact overview of a given tourism business (hotel, restaurant, travel agency, tourist site etc.) in the form of a mind map, showing all the key components. However, unlike the traditional “static” mind maps, in GIFT the different components are modifiable and related by mathematical formulas. The choices that the user makes reflect on the level of environmental sustainability of the entire business, which will be automatically calculated. For instance choosing a low-flow or dual flush toilets for a hotel or a restaurant will decrease the environmental impact and save costs, comparing to the use of traditional ones.
The project is coordinated by The Centre for Inclusive Education (CIE) in Bulgaria. Other project partners are Context Learning (Finland), Ecosystem Europe (Bulgaria), The Vocational school for tourism “Mihalaki Georgiev” – Vidin (Bulgaria) and Stockholm Environment Institute Tallinn Centre (Estonia).
